More things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of …
In this exhibition where I am playing with elements that relate to (but only obliquely) the earth and the sky, I am, I think, questioning where we sit in relation to the universe. In the past century (20th rather than 19th) humanity has seen a substantial emotional shift from an Earth-centred cosmos to a consciousness that allows us daily (in weather reports specifically) to view our world from space. This ball spinning in space becomes alarmingly fragile when we view the mantle of atmosphere that sustains us, against the background of infinity.
But this is only a beginning. Even in the most abstract work, there is an impetus: maybe a colour, an evocative shape, a particular material. In the execution of this work my personal concerns with patterning, with the grid, with progressions and transitions take precedence over the allegorical implications of my thinking. My practice is about the subtlety of shifting colour, light and shade; the very elements that link us physically and emotionally to the very constrained but complex world we inhabit.
